Scary

Squirrels are amazing.

They are quick and adaptable, able to live in the woods or in most urban areas, with people or without ‘em.  Ten species of squirrels in North America include tree squirrels, flying squirrels, and  ground squirrels. If you are pretty sure you’re finding squirrel damage on your property, you’ll want to move quickly.

Getting rid of squirrels in your home, attic or garden begins with knowing what you’re up against. Get to know your neighbors! Here’s a few facts about squirrels:

What do squirrels eat?

In the natural world, squirrels eat nuts and seeds but, survivors that they are, will eat anything available if they need to.  In your neighborhood they love raiding bird feeders, dog or cat food that’s left out, plant bulbs, shoots, and your tastiest tomatoes and other fruits. Getting rid of squirrels becomes more difficult when there are lots of tasty squirrel-type treats to be found!

Where do squirrels live?

In the forest or suburban areas, squirrels nest high in trees. Given the opportunity, they know a good thing when they see it, and your attic is looking like the penthouse at the Times Square Hilton. Squirrel damage causes homeowners a lot of problems…you may begin to see signs even when you are spring cleaning or preparing to clean the outside of your home.

How long do squirrels live?

The top lifespan for a squirrel can be as much as 10 or 12 years! The reality is that if they live in suburban or urban areas, 5 or 6 years is about average.
